Polyvagal Theory: Understanding Your Nervous System’s Response

Have you ever wondered why some situations make you feel completely at ease while others send you into panic mode or leave you feeling totally shut down? That’s your nervous system at work. Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, helps us understand how our body and brain respond to safety and threat, shaping our emotions, behaviours, and even our relationships.
At its core, Polyvagal Theory explains that our autonomic nervous system isn’t just about "fight or flight" versus "rest and digest." Instead, it operates on three main states: the social engagement system (ventral state), the fight or flight (sympathetic state), and shutdown (dorsal vagal state).
Why Does This Matter in Therapy?
Your nervous system’s responses are automatic, but they are not set in stone. By learning to recognize and work with these states, you can build greater resilience, shift out of chronic stress responses, and find more moments of safety and connection. Therapy helps you tune into these patterns, develop tools to regulate your nervous system, and create a sense of stability even in the face of life’s challenges.
The goal isn’t to avoid stress altogether (because, well, life happens). Instead, it’s about becoming more aware of your body’s cues and learning how to gently guide yourself back to a state of safety and connection.
